Commercial Orange Is orange juice really pure juice?
Most commercial orange juice is advertised as "pure squezzed orange juice" but orange juice doesnt even look or taste like the one from the store. So what else is in the bottle???
Most orange juice is made from varieties of orange specifically grown for their juice. In most juices a mixture of varieties is used to give a more consistent product.
Orange growers will process (juice) these oranges the day they are picked so most of these oranges have not been genetically selected for their ability to look pretty, ship well, and stay fresh for a long time.
Most oranges in the store these days are navel oranges which have superior eating characteristics, but make lousy juice. Navel juice begins to deteriorate almost immediately.
I can't remember the last bag of juice oranges I saw in the store, but I stopped looking for them a long time ago. $4 or more for a bag that produces a couple glasses of juice is way more than I am prepared to pay.
When I was a kid you could only buy frozen juice concentrate, so the only way to get a decent glass of juice was to do it yourself. Of course back then a thin 4-6 ounce glass was all the juice one wanted or needed for breakfast. Not anymore.
Nowadays, a carton of "not from concentrate" 100% juice is an outstanding product and far more economical than trying to squeeze ones own, and you don't have to worry about one kind of "off" orange spoiling the whole squeeze.
