I ♥ David Sedaris. And yeah. I hate the whole “One of them has to be the wife” thing. Or the husband, for lesbianism, though of course that's much less of a point-and-sneer, coarse-titillation factor because that sought-after gender equality you're looking for still just means that women are allowed to emulate some masculine characteristics, because of course those are desirable, but men shouldn't emulate feminine characteristics, because girls have cooties or something. *eyeroll*
It's one of the things I really dig about my marriage. I earn more than Puck. He does way more house cleaning. We both cook, but when it's time to fire up the grill, that's me. He is more likely to build stuff, but that's mostly because my measuring skills suck, not because I can't handle power tools. He likes to do interior decoration. I mow the lawn, he shovels snow. We both garden. I'm in charge of household bills. He sews, I knit. It's just a big ol' scramble of gender roles.
One of the many things that was awesome about Overs. If you break it down, Keith cooks, gardens, has “gotten domestic”, makes homemade lemonade, and is in touch with and aware of his own emotional state as well as Lance's — at least, moreso than Lance is. ;-) Yet there's no point during that fic where I feel like you put Keith into a feminine role. He's a guy who has grown up and figured some shit out, and is waiting for the guy who hasn't yet to catch the hell up. And if he has to screw him six ways from Sunday to encourage the process, well, who's arguing? *grin*
On the other hand, I do still like fics where the characters themselves have to deal with this bit of societal conditioning. It crops up in Gatch sometimes, and frankly I find it very easy to see Joe as someone who would freak out because the idea of bottoming during sex would mean taking on a “subordinate” or “female” role, because he's just a big bundle of emotionally inept testosterone in a society that is far from gender-blind.
