much of the costco stuff is private label from established folks like mountain house. their technology is truly awesome, freeze-dried with pretty good nutrient retention over a very long time, 20+ years. one pays for the longevity.
for less fancy folks, a garden variety asian grocery store will sell nitrogen packed bags of rice with storage lives of 10+ years.
or, one could always plant an apple tree, even on a 0.23 acre lot in riverside/og.
