What is the difference in diameter?
Some cookware has a stainless steel interior (17.3 X 10power of neg 6 K to the power of neg one and a copper bottom 17.0 x10 power of neg 6 fpr better heat distribution. Suppose an 8.0in pot of this contruction is heated to 610 degreesC on the stove. If the initial temperature of the pot is 22 degreesC. What is the diference in diameter change for the copper and the steel?
The steel and copper have, as you've noted, (slightly) different coefficients of thermal expansion. Therefore, if you started with two 8" disks at the same temperature, one of copper and one of stainless steel, and heated them, you'd get two (slightly) different diameters.
But the construction of the pot does not allow them to go their separate ways - they expand or contract together. So the one with the higher coefficient will try to "pull" the other to a larger radius, while the one with the lower coefficient will try to "pull" the other to a smaller radius.
The result will be a situation of equal strain in the two materials and the net expansion will depend on the coefficients of elasticity and the thickness of the two materials.

However, in reality, the two coefficients are very close together compared with those of other materials:

1 degree C = 1 degree K
