What mileage,your car has done?If your mileage is low,you can always bring this matter to dealers and holding them liable for parts defect.(put it as manufacture defect,see if can)

Please take it to qualified BMW mechanic and compare cost.
Check for any links dropped.upon knowing the result,you can try with gearbox repairers for repairs or a swap with lower cost.Last give a try with salvage yard if you can spare some time.

i experienced the same problem w/ "98" 740IL. i was informed that the business mid needed replacing at $1150 u.s., an online search netted me a re-manufactured radio fo $72.00 u.s., plus freight. installed it in 15 minutes and have audio.

wat about the LHD z are4 their a lot of those cause i found one that's in ok condition but i don't know where to get replacement parts for it. so im kinda scared on whether or not to get it cause i want to drop an rb26 in sometime after buying it.
